Ah, toddlers. “The most accommodating and obedient age group of all!”…
We polled hat experts and fashion lovers, asking “will baseball hats will ever go out of style?” Here is what three of them had to say:
Andrew Selepak, Ph.D.
Director – Master’s program with specialization in Social Media and Lecturer – Department of Telecommunication, UF College of Journalism and Communications
Mankind has been wearing hats for thousands of years. While certain style hats may go out of style, humans will most likely be wearing hats for many centuries to come.
Baseball hats are a relatively new addition to the long tradition of human headwear going back to the first baseball games in the 1800s when players wore head coverings that looked more like berets than what we think of as baseball hats today. But since then the design has moved away from the baseball diamond and into everyday life.
Unlike the cowboy hat which serves to shade the entire face and part of the neck, the baseball hat most covers the eyes and face making its utilitarian design useful in different weather conditions. But unlike other forms of head coverings, the baseball hat also serves an additional purpose because its design allows us to display logos on the front of our favorite sports team, politician, university, brand, or really any logo or message.
The fact that baseball hats come in any color and size makes them a useful marketing tool for companies and for individuals to show their brand, team, or political loyalty.
So long as baseball hats can continue to be used as a walking billboard and serve a utilitarian purpose, they will be worn by blue collar and white collar workers whether they are working, going out in the elements, or want to add some fashion to their wardrobe.
