“Wide brimmed and narrow, some tall, some not, some fancy, some…
New Year’s Eve is a magical night of excitement and merry-making. As the year winds to its end, you might find yourself contemplating the past 12 months while predicting what will happen in the next 12. New Year’s Eve’s count-down in anticipation to midnight can be a fun-filled night. You and your friends and family tally the seconds until the clock strikes midnight, at which point you finally get to do one of two things: 1. Go straight to bed (it’s past your bedtime anyway), or 2. Party in the New Year!
Depending on where you live, you might have certain New Year’s Eve traditions when it comes to celebrating the end of one year and the beginning of another. For example, you may don traditional New Year’s Eve hats. The pointy, cone-shaped hat or top hat-style cap can be hand-made or commercial-made. They come in various designs, colors, and textures, but they all carry New Year’s decorations and greetings. Many New Year’s hats display encouraging start-of-the-year messages that welcome and give hope for the year that has just started. Often, people will also wear sparkly beads and crazy glasses as they welcome in the New Year.
The celebration of the New Year will not be complete without the food. Champagne and other sparkling beverages seem to overflow as people celebrate this first holiday of the year. The air rings with glasses chinking and toasts being made. Hors-d’oeuvres such as cheese balls, crackers, decadent cakes, and savory vegetable trays clutter up the dinner table, and people eat to bursting.
Noisemakers and confetti bombs are other beloved New Year’s Eve traditions. People of all ages make noise by blowing on their trumpets and other noisemakers as a way of welcoming the New Year. Confetti poppers shower the New Year in glittering multi-colored shapes, and sparklers and fireworks light the streets and the sky. New Year’s Eve is indeed one of the merriest celebrations of the year.
As the celebration winds down, however, you might find yourself pondering upon the more serious matters in life. You might reflect on your high points and low points of the previous year, and resolve to make your life better than it’s ever been. Maybe you’d like to hit the gym a little more often or eat healthier. You might want to travel the world or call your family more regularly. The idea of making resolutions is to commit to improving the different aspects of your life.
As you make your New Year’s Resolutions, don’t forget to write them down somewhere. Studies show that people who write down their resolutions and goals are significantly more likely to achieve them.
