Don’t Forget Your Hat While Running

Don’t Forget Your Hat While Running

Wearing a hat while running is a matter of personal preference for most runners. While some runners feel like the hat weighs them down, other runners feel like something is missing if they leave the house without any headgear on.

Whatever your preferences on the issue are, here are some undeniable benefits to wearing a hat while running:

  • Protects against rain and sun — Most dedicated runners hit the road or trails no matter what the weather. Runners’ hats can help shield the head from the sun, preventing sunburns on the scalp. It can also keep eyes clear of sun, rain, wind, and dust, improving a runner’s ability to see.
  • Prevents overheating — One of the main reasons runners wear a hat is to help keep them cool. This may seem counterproductive, as having a hat on your head might seem to make you hotter. However, a good running hat will help evaporate sweat. Running hats are generally made of light, breathable material that allows air to cool down the runner instead of making them too hot.
  • Provides aerodynamics — Many other sports use things like cycling helmets or swim caps to reduce drag during races. Hats for runners can do the same thing. While a hat may not make as much of a difference during a race as a cap would for a swimmer, it may shave a few seconds off, which could give you an edge in a tight race.
  • Controls hair — Depending on the length or style of your hair, it may not be able to be tied back. Loose and long hair can become annoying and cumbersome when you’re running. Even if you have long hair, flyaway hair could also get in your face, impacting your ability to see clearly. Wearing a hat with a hole for your ponytail can help keep your hair away from your face while also preventing your neck and shoulders from getting too hot

Check out our article on whether your hat can go the distance, where we discuss the different factors that make a great running hat.

To sum it up, if you’re a runner but have never tried wearing a hat while running, it may be worth seeing what benefits it can bring to you. Chances are, once you start running, you’ll forget you’re even wearing the hat.
